Nigerian man to be elected as Portlaoise town mayor

Ireland is reportedly set to get its first-ever black mayor today, with a Nigerian man expected to be elected as the head of Portlaoise town council.

Forty-three-year-old Rotimi Adebari arrived in Ireland seven years ago after fleeing religious persecution in his homeland along with his wife and two children.

He has been a councillor in Portlaoise since 2004 and reports this morning say he is set to be elected as mayor this afternoon under a pact between Fine Gael, Sinn Féin and independent councillors.

Mr Adebari has set up a consultancy company that trains other organisations in cross-cultural awareness and also works for Laois County Council co-ordinating an integration project for local immigrants

You are eligible to be elected to a local authority if you are ordinarily resident in Ireland and you are at least 18 years old. You do not have to be an Irish citizen.

Certain people are disqualified from becoming members of a local authority:

A member of the European Commission, Parliament or Courts
A Minister of the Government or a Minister of State
An Ceann Comhairle (the Chairman of the Dáil) and an Cathaoirleach (the Chairman of the Seanad)
Members of an Garda Siochana (Irish police force) or a full-time member of the Irish defence forces
Judges
The Comptroller and Auditor General
Civil servants
People who have been imprisoned for a term longer than 6 months
People who have failed pay local authority charges
People who have failed to comply with an order of a court to pay money due to a local authority
People who have been convicted of fraud or dishonest dealings, corrupt practice or acting while disqualified.

Greift - Flüchtlinge/Asylanten bekommen m.W. genau wie in anderen EU-Staaten lediglich ein Bleiberecht (inklusive Arbeitsgenehmigung etc.pp.).

Bekommt man als Fluechtling in Irland automatisch die irische Staatsbuergerschaft?

Nein, automatisch bekommt keine Flüchtling die Staatsbürgerschaft.

Es wird je nach Art der Asyl unterschieden (hoffe ich habe jetzt hier alles richtig zusammentragen - Angaben ohne Gewähr )

"Convention refugees" und "Programm refugees" (Flüchtlinge die die Bedinungen der Genfer Konvention erfüllen oder Flüchtlinge die von der Regierung aus humanitäre Gründe eingeladen worden sind) können nach 3 Jahre die Staatsbürgerschaft beantragen, wenn du über 18 bist und kommt nach Irland in Rahmen einer "Familienzusammenführug", kannst du nach 5 jahren Staatbürgerschaft bantragen

Andere können nach 5 Jahre beantragen (wobei soziale Abhängigkeit negative Auswirkungen hat)

Asylbewerber haben kein Arbeitsrecht
