"The IDA is claiming that up to 15,000 jobs may be lost in high tech industries, as the sector
rationalises operations around the world. Around one third of the 300 multinational companies
operating in the tech sector are at high risk of closure according to the IDA. It's rumoured that Dell, which employs almost 4,000 in Limerick and Wicklow, is likely to close within three years. In the past 18 months Dell has cut 1,800 jobs and it is thought that they will follow the trend of relocating to lower cost locations. The technology sector has seen a net increase of 5,000 jobs over the last three years but labour costs are now running at 12 times the rates
in China and Eastern Europe and the IDA is warning that basic production are no longer likely to come Ireland's way. This warning comes after the loss of almost 1000 jobs in Dublin and
Kildare earlier this week."

The Celtic Tiger was burning

Ich würde sagen ein ganz normaler und vorauszusehender wirtschaftlicher Vorgang.

Deutschland hat diese Geschichte schon erlebt. Es gab die fetten Jahre und die Jahre des Wirtschaftswunders. Irgendwann tritt eine Sättigung ein.
Wenn wir 15 Jahre zurück denken, so gab es wenn Autos, dann meist sehr alte Autos und wenige.

Mit der EU begann ein Goldrausch, Arbeitsplätze wurden generiert, damit höhere Einkünfte und ein ähnliches Erwachen wie in Ostdeutschland.

Ein sehr starkes Konsumdenken wurde geboren und auch ausgelebt.
Es wird noch weitere Rückschläge geben, nennen wir es doch die Phase der Konsolidierung. Eine Welle von Zwangsversteigerungen wird auf die Leute und Banken zukommen, denn viele haben sich mit der Aussicht auf goldene Zeiten finanziell übernommen.
Wie immer wird sich die "Natur" selbst helfen, aber es wird ein anderer Markt geschaffen werden. Der Markt der Verwerter.

Auch dieser Markt wird interessant werden.

Allerdings glaube ich das noch viele Lernprozesse zu bewältigen sind und die traue ich den Iren eher zu als den Deutschen.

Ich bin neugierig und sehe dem eher gelassen entgegen.

Statement by IDA Ireland 12th September 2003

Today’s Irish Examiner contained a series of statements and assertations with which IDA Ireland does not agree.

There have been job gains and losses in many multinational companies in Ireland in recent years. IDA foresees this continuing, with the possibility of losses exceeding job gains while the current world downturn continues. IDA expects that 12,000 new jobs will be created in overseas companies in Ireland this year; we acknowledge that a somewhat larger number – perhaps up to 15,000 – may be at risk.

IDA has never said and does not believe that “Dell will be gone within three years”.

To avoid any mis-understanding IDA today confirms what it has always said - that Dell has managed a very successful operation in Ireland for over eleven years and has received the full support of IDA over the years and this continues. Dell's Limerick operations continue to be Dell's most efficient manufacturing site worldwide. Dell's operation in Bray/Cherrywood serves the company's home and small business division in EMEA. In addition, the Irish operation has recently evolved to include a number of key European functions such as the company's European Centre of Excellence for Supply Chain
Management and Engineering. The EMEA Enterprise Expert Centre, the Applications Solutions laboratory together with specialist EMEA finance and marketing functions are also located here. Dell continues to be a major employer in Ireland and is one of the country's top exporters.
